Purpose, role and election

Membership and elected bodies

All students at InspireU will be elected to the student council by learners. 

Purposes of the student council

The purposes of the SU are to:

  • provide a major forum for student voice and active citizenship within the college
  • provide a means of consultation between students and the senior leadership team
  • promote and support student events

The student council

The membership of the student council shall be:

  • elected by their peers and support learners to have a voice at InspireU
  • student council members cannot be removed from the student council unless:
    • they have written to the chairperson and senior lead to explain why they are leaving their role
    • they are voted off the student council due to non-attendance or inappropriate behaviour
  • a further election will take place if a student council member leaves their position

The role of the student council will be to:

  • set the overall policy and direction of the SC
  • support the 'you said, we did' recommendations and positive changes at InspireU
  • respond to requests from senior college managers for matters to be discussed and set up working groups as appropriate
  • raise the concerns of students with senior managers

The student council will comprise the following posts (see appendix one for job descriptions):

  • chairperson (one post)
  • deputy chairperson (one post)
  • wellbeing lead (one post)
  • secretary (one post)
  • student council member (seven posts)

The election of the student union

A timeline is below of voting student council representatives onto the student council. The new student union members shall take up their posts on 1 October or the nearest date thereafter.

All students are eligible to stand for the posts and to vote if they wish.

Candidates will be invited to:

  • campaign for a week before the elections
  • address the student body at least once

The candidates will be made aware of the duties attached to each position on the student union.

Members of the student council will be elected for one year in the first instance. They may be removed from office if a majority of the student college vote in support of such a motion.
